HISTORY OF OAK VALLEY CHURCH

Oak Valley Church received its name from the reality of its existence, being built in the valley from oak trees.

The church was founded around 1910 by Rev. Martha Leigh. Rev. Leigh resigned the pastorate after five years. Several other ministers followed: Rev. Silva, Rev. Sims, Rev. Liabieger, Rev. King, and Rev. Easton. After Rev. East on left, the church was without a pastor for several years.

In 1953, Rev. Eva Hunt, pastor of Pana Full Gospel Church, reopened the church. It was made a part of the United Pentecostal Church International in 1954.

In 1956, Rev. Orville Denton was elected pastor. He continued until 1970 when he resigned for health reasons. The Rev. Coy Sampson became pastor and the present sanctuary was built under his direction. In 1972, Rev. Sampson resigned and Rev. Denton returned. In 1981, Rev. Denton again resigned because of health reasons and Rev. Mark Morris was elected pastor. The south wing was built during his tenure. In 1985, Rev. Morris resigned and Rev. Denton returned to pastor until he retired in 1996. Many souls were converted and much progress was made under his capable leadership.

In March of 1997, Rev. Charles Yeakel became pastor.

In the spring of 1998, the foyer and sanctuary were remodeled.

God has truly been good to Oak Valley Church over the years. While we are thankful for the past, we have a vision for the future of spiritual and numeric growth. The church must fulfill the Great Commission given by our Lord to "preach the gospel to every creature".
