Attaining Pentecost, Part 1

Dear Christian Friends: Greetings in the name of the ONLY wise God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. "Deception IX: No Pentecost" should be read before reading this email. That email stirred up a lot of spirits; much like disturbing a hornet's nest...with the accompanying stings, praise the Lord...Pentecost is an experience wrought by God.

He requires that we ASK for it;

Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: HOW MUCH MORE SHALL YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER GIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THEM THAT ASK HIM?

and that we OBEY Him;

Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also THE HOLY GHOST, WHOM GOD HATH GIVEN TO THEM THAT OBEY HIM.

We don't imagine Pentecost into existence, we ask, obey, and WAIT/TARRY until the Holy Ghost comes.

But don't be surprised if grief comes first.

Some on this list may remember my January 2000 email invitation to examine the self-life. It was entitled, "A disturbing yet exciting voyage" ( www.jesus-is-lord.com/email41.txt ). When I wrote it, I didn't know that I was moving towards Pentecost. I just knew that I was an undone sister. I was almost despondent. The Lord had pulled back the curtain and let me see myself ON THE INSIDE. On the outside of me, there wasn't much sin to see...but on the inside? O my! What grief I underwent for my INWARD condition (guile, pride, man-fearing, harsh, over sensitive, etc.)! I told the Lord that I didn't even know how to pray about it. "How do you change your very perceptions?" I asked. "It's too deep for me to get too." If the problem had been smoking cigarettes, I could have worked on stopping.

But HOW do you change the way that you see things and react? Within a few days, the Lord told me what to pray; "Search my inward parts". As the year wore on, the Lord did this to me several other times (manifested my inward condition.). His work was so penetrating and revealing that at times I found myself undone on the floor or repeating, "I'm so embarrassed." At one point, I was so undone that I actually wondered how I could be saved; but it was not unto my death, it was unto my LIFE. I was in great sorrow over my sins and the Lord gave me comfort scriptures (like Hebrews 12:5-13) which kept me from despondency.

Last month, in February of 2003 (three years LATER), I read this in "Experiencing the Holy Spirit" by Andrew Murray (1828-1917);

" At no stage of our spiritual career are THE POWER AND THE DECEITFULNESS OF OUR INDIVIDUAL SELF AND THE SELF-LIFE MORE MANIFEST THAN IN THE ATTEMPT TO GRASP THE FULL BLESSING OF PENTECOST. Happy is the man who is brought to the point of acknowledging his helplessness and impotence. He will especially need to deny himself here and CEASE TO EXPECT ANYTHING FROM HIS OWN LIFE AND STRENGTH. He will rather lay himself down in the presence of the Lord as one who is impotent and dead, that he may really receive the blessing from Him."

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT?

First of all understand, this is only for saved people.

That said, you must PRAY/ASK for the Holy Spirit;

Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: HOW MUCH MORE SHALL YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER GIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THEM THAT ASK HIM?

That is it. But there are some things you must bring to the asking. You must ask with a sincere MIND. If you are not serious when you ask, you will receive nothing. If you are not willing to be changed or if you have certain sins that you are not willing to give up, you will receive nothing. The following sections deal with your inward condition as you ask and wait for the coming of the Holy Ghost. Any quotes come from "Experiencing the Holy Spirit" by Andrew Murray, comments in brackets [ ] are mine...

RENOUNCE YOUR "SELF"

You will not be filled with the Holy Ghost as long as you maintain your affection for your sins. If you justify your sins as "Christian liberty" or refuse to be reproved you'll remain where you are. THE HOLY GHOST COMES TO CLEANSE YOU and to take you higher in the faith. You won't go to the Lord's table with dirty hands.

"This new cleansing must come through new confession and discovery of sin. The old leaven cannot be purged away unless it is first searched for and found. Do not say that you already know sufficiently well that your Christian life is full of sin. Sit down in silent meditation with the express purpose of seeing what your life as a Christian has been. How much pride, self-seeking, worldliness, self-will, and impurity has been in it? Can such a heart receive the fullness of the Spirit? IT IS IMPOSSIBLE."

After searching you out, the Holy Ghost will PURGE YOU and put a supernatural RESTRAINT on your mind. Not only that, He will supply you with righteous qualities. As corrupt as we are, ONLY God can do this. Do you want your pet sins, or do you want to be right? If you are willing to renounce yourSELF and the things that YOU like, you are ready for Pentecost.

"At no stage of our spiritual career are the power and the deceitfulness of our individual self and the self-life more manifest than in the attempt to grasp the full blessing of Pentecost. MANY PEOPLE ENDEAVOR TO APPROPRIATE THIS BLESSING BY A GREAT VARIETY OF EFFORTS. THEY DO NOT SUCCEED AND ARE NOT ABLE TO DISCOVER THE REASON WHY. They forget that self-will can never cast out self-will and that self can never really mortify itself. Happy is the man who is brought to the point of acknowledging his helplessness and impotence. HE WILL ESPECIALLY NEED TO DENY HIMSELF [people don't want to hear that] here and cease to expect anything from his own life and strength. He will rather lay himself down in the presence of the Lord as one who is impotent and dead, that he may really receive the blessing from Him. "It is your part, believer, to deny yourself, to lose your own life, and in the presence of the Lord to sink down in your nothingness and impotence. ACCUSTOM YOURSELF TO SET YOUR HEART BEFORE HIM IN DEEP HUMILITY, SILENT PATIENCE, AND CHILDLIKE SUBMISSION. The humility that is prepared to be nothing, THE PATIENCE THAT WILL WAIT FOR HIM AND HIS TIME, AND THE SUBMISSION THAT WILL YIELD ITSELF WHOLLY THAT HE MAY DO WHAT SEEMS GOOD IS ALL THAT YOU CAN DO TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE READY TO LOSE YOUR LIFE. [be obedient and wait until He comes] "Jesus summons you to follow Him. Remember how He first sacrificed His will. He laid down His life into the hands of the Father, went down into the grave, AND WAITED until God raised Him to life again. IN LIKE MANNER, YOU ARE TO BE READY TO LAY DOWN YOUR LIFE IN WEAKNESS, ASSURED THAT GOD WILL RAISE IT UP AGAIN IN POWER WITH THE FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT. FORFEIT THE STRENGTH OF MERE PERSONAL EFFORTS... Not by might nor by power, BUT BY MY SPIRIT, SAITH THE LORD (Zechariah 4:6) " Regard, THE DENYING OF YOURSELF as the first and most necessary work of every day... THE GREAT HINDRANCE IN THE WAY OF THE LIFE OF PENTECOST IS THE SELF-LIFE. BELIEVE IN THE SINFULNESS OF THAT LIFE, NOT BECAUSE OF ITS GROSS EXTERNAL SINS, BUT BECAUSE IT SETS ITSELF IN THE PLACE OF GOD. [making your own decisions about what "you" want to do, instead of God ruling you] It seeks, pleases, and honors itself MORE THAN GOD. "Recognize your own life as your own WORST enemy and as the enemy of God. Begin to see what the full blessing is that Jesus has prepared for you and which He bestowed at Pentecost; namely, His own indwelling. COUNT NOTHING TO PRECIOUS OR TOO COSTLY TO GIVE AS AN EXCHANGE FOR THIS PEARL OF GREAT PRICE. "Believer are you REALLY sincere about being filled with the Spirit of God? Is it your great desire to know what hinders you from obtaining it? Take the word of our Lord and keep it in your heart. Go with it to Him. He is able to make you understand and experience it. It is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. "...DENY YOURSELF AND FOLLOW HIM. LOSE YOUR OWN LIFE AND FIND HIS. LET HIM IMPART HIMSELF IN THE PLACE YOU HAVE UP TO THIS TIME RETAINED FOR YOURSELF. From Him there will flow rivers of living water." (Experiencing, pp. 56-59)

Say, "Lord, not MY will but THINE be done." Forsake your SELFwill for the will of God. Evil people are SELFwilled (II Peter 2:10). When we get saved in these days of apostasy, we don't hear much about forsaking and renouncing our SELF and all our nasty habits.

LET CHRIST RULE OVER YOU. KEEP NOTHING TO YOURSELF. Throw open every door to the rooms of your heart that He may have His way. Deny Him not. Start throwing away everything that dishonours the Lord (exception: if you are a wife and your husband objects to this, THEN LISTEN TO YOUR HUSBAND) including books, albums, carnal friends, cancelling cable subscriptions, etc.

You have to forsake everything to be a disciple of Jesus Christ; including your own SELF and life. You must ABANDON yourself to the will of God and His HOLY word.

Luke 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

John 12:25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

We have too much "self". Schools teach "self-esteem". The Bible reveals that we have TOO MUCH self-esteem, we are to esteem OTHER people better than ourselves;

Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each ESTEEM OTHER BETTER THAN THEMSELVES.

That's why the second great commandment is to love your neighbor as yourSELF. You love yourSELF. You want to gratify yourSELF. This has to be OVERRIDEN for you to be filled with the Holy Ghost. He doesn't come to play second fiddle to yourSELF. He comes to EXPEL the SELF-life.

Most Christian men are not FILLED with the Holy Ghost, they are filled with "self" and the world. Sin and wrong teaching has blinded Christians so much that they think there is not Holy Ghost and that it is impossible to live a holy life. We need to let those heresies go back to the gates of hell where they came from. You need to renounce your SELF-will, your SELF-satisfaction, and yourSELF-esteem.

Stop making excuses for your besetting sins and the let the Lord reveal YOU to YOU. For example, look at how you handle money (the love of money is the root of ALL evil; more on that in a later Deception email, Lord willing). Are you greedy or lustful? Debt does not appear out of no where. Something got you there whether greed or God blowing on your purse because of your rebellion in some area. Christians run up credit card debts, get a second mortgage to "pay them off" and then proudly proclaim that they are "debt-free". No, that's a fantasy. They are not debt-free, the ONLY thing that has changed is the name of their creditor. Before it was Honest Sam Mortgage Company, now it's the Joe Schmoe Mortgage Company. But they don't even think about that; they'd rather hold on to the illusion that they are debt free AND KEEP ON CHARGING AND BUYING MORE "STUFF" THAT THEY DON'T NEED.

And in those cases where they actually do need something, they refuse to sacrifice and save to purchase what they need, they use credit. How many Christians are addicted to QVC (if it is still on the air) and spend money on that which they do not need or use? Debt is just one example. How many other things do we do that are unrighteous and we keep making excuses for them? Like gluttony, guile, horror movies, unforgiveness, lying, deceit, tv, rebellion to husband, gossip, greed,materialism, depression drugs, "Christian" psychology sessions, pride, lust, etc.?

Check out SELF LIFE for items you may have never considered. ONLY GOD CAN REVEAL THE DEPTH OF OUR DEPRAVITY. ONLY GOD. WE THINK OUR SINS ARE JUST PART OF OUR PERSONALITY AND LIFE; BUT THEY ARE NOT. THEY ARE TO BE EXCISED AND WE ARE TO COOPERATE IN THE PROCESS;

Colossians 3:5 MORTIFY THEREFORE YOUR MEMBERS WHICH ARE UPON THE EARTH; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Romans 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but IF YE THROUGH THE SPIRIT DO MORTIFY THE DEEDS OF THE BODY, ye shall live.

Beg the Lord to show you your inward parts. For those who heed this email and ask the Lord to fill you with His Holy Spirit I am letting you know that you will see some things about yourself that are very grievous. Ask the Lord to help you to bear up underneath the hideous disclosures. They are not unto your death, but unto your life. YOUR DESPAIR WILL BREAK UP YOUR HARD HEART, MORTIFYING YOUR SELF-LIFE AND CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF. This will enable you to receive something entirely new; a divine life (ref. II Pet 1:4) through the Spirit of the glorified Jesus in the INNERMOST depths of your soul (ref. Experiencing, p. 36).

"DESCENT INTO TRUE SELF-DESPAIR, IS INDISPENSIBLE IF WE WOULD ENJOY" THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY GHOST (ref. Experiencing, p. 66)

When you go through this, you will find that lifelong bad habits start disappearing. Sins you battled for so long, you have divine help to overcome. As long as you WANT to stay corrupt in certain areas, you won't have an overcoming life. But if you give all over to the Lord, you'll be an overcomer.

Get sick of yourSELF and the dead end road that you are on. Desire MORE. Frankly, leave the vomit. The world YOU cling to is making you sick. Back to Bro. Murray;

"Oh that we understood better that nothing hampers us as much as SECRET RELIANCE ON OURSELVES. On the other hand, NOTHING brings as much blessing as ENTIRE DESPAIR OF OURSELVES AND ALL THAT IS ON THE EARTH, TEACHING US TO TURN OUR HEARTS WHOLLY TO HEAVEN AND PARTAKE OF THE HEAVENLY GIFT."

Either YOU will be king of your heart or King Jesus and His word will be King. Which will it be? It can't be both. You need a SINGLE eye; and THEN your whole body will be full of light. You cannot retain any thing (decisions, opinions, desires) to yourSELF. You have to be WILLING to be changed completely; and to make any changes that the Lord wants to make in you. You can't hang on to your likes. You must deny yourSELF;

Matthew 16:24-25 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and WHOSOEVER WILL LOSE HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE SHALL FIND IT.

Today in many churches converts have kept so much world in themselves (hellivision, movies, pride, etc.) that they need a time of serious purging to be ready to be filled. THE HOLY GHOST IS NOT GOING TO COME JOIN IN WITH YOUR EXISTING WORLDLY VIEW. We need a lot of purging to receive the Holy Ghost, because He is not going to come in His fullness as long as we hang on to our deep rooted selfishness and worldliness.

"The Lord gave first the promise,
'I will cleanse you'
[ref. Eze 36:25-27].
Then he gave the second promise,
'I will put My Spirit within you'.

The Holy Spirit cannot come with power or fill the heart and continue to dwell in it, unless a special and complete cleansing first takes place within it.

"The Spirit and sin are engaged in a mortal combat. The only reason why the Spirit works so feebly in the Church IS SIN, which is all too little known OR DREADED or cast out. Men do not believe in the power of Christ to cleanse; and, therefore, He cannot do His work of baptizing with the Spirit." (Experiencing, p. 120)

REPENT & ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR SINS
AS GOD SHOWS THEM TO YOU.

Once you see your grisly ways, REPENT and ask forgiveness. Acknowledge your wickedness and ask the Lord to renew A RIGHT SPIRIT WITHIN YOU that you may stop offending. It will be hard to see yourself as you really are, but the Lord will show you so you can rebuke and forsake your own SELF. This purging, once accomplished, will give way to strength and holiness.

YIELD/SURRENDER EVERYTHING TO THE WILL OF GOD

Consecrate yourself (your mind, affections, etc.) and your goods (your house, your car, your reading glasses, your children, etc.) to the Lord; HIS glory, and HIS pleasure, HIS will; not yours. Understand that life is not about YOUR happiness and what YOU feel like doing. I am a happy person, but THAT IS JUST A BY PRODUCT of my sole reason for living; glorifying the Lord. Desire to do the will of God on earth. The Holy Spirit comes to help you GLORIFY JESUS CHRIST and NOT yourSELF. Forget yourSELF.

DETERMINE to do the will of God; at the expense of SELF. OBEY GOD'S WORD TO GET THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY GHOST;

Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also THE HOLY GHOST, WHOM GOD HATH GIVEN TO THEM THAT OBEY HIM.

John 14:15-16 If ye love me, KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS. AND I WILL PRAY THE FATHER, AND HE SHALL GIVE YOU ANOTHER COMFORTER (The Holy Spirit) , that he may abide with you for ever;

And when the Holy Ghost comes, KEEP OBEYING. You will find that doing the will of God will be your meat and your sustenance; it's your honey and apples, milk and meat and bread. A powerful experience.

"The exercise of this obedience gives the soul a wonderful firmness, confidence, and power to trust God and to expect all from Him. A strong will is necessary for a strong faith, and it is in obedience that the will is strengthened to trust God to the uttermost. This is the only way in which the Lord can lead us to EVER-RICHER blessing." (Experiencing p.76)

RENOUNCE THE WORLD

The Spirit will not abide with the world. Make your choice. The Holy Ghost or the world (that includes the THINGS of the world, their evil inventions). The Holy Ghost comes to cast our your SELFwill and the WORLD. He will not simply be added to the existing world in you. You have to be willing to be purged from the world and the world purged from you.

THE HOLY GHOST WILL BURN UP EVERYTHING IN YOU THAT IS ABOMINABLE, BUT YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE A MIND TO COOPERATE WITH THIS DIVINE FIERY WORK.

"The spirit of this world, which is devotion to the visible, is in irreconcilable antagonism with the Spirit of Jesus in heaven, where God and His will are EVERYTHING." "...God has always called on His people to SEPARATE themselves from the world and to live as pilgrims whose treasure and heart are in heaven. But is this what is really seen among Christians? ...When they have attained to a measure of unblameableness in their walk and assurance of heaven, MOST CHRISTIANS CONSIDER THAT THEY ARE AT LIBERTY TO ENJOY THE WORLD AS FULLY AS OTHERS [not so]. Little is seen of true heavenly-mindedness in conversation and walk or in disposition and endeavor. Is not this the case because THE SEARCH FOR SPIRITUAL EXCELLENCE IS SO LITTLE ENJOYED AND SOUGHT FOR? "Light drives out darkness. The Spirit of heaven EXPELS the spirit of the world. Where a man does not surrender himself to be filled with the Spirit of Jesus...Christian though he may be, he must come under the power of the spirit of the world. Listen to the piercing cry that rises from the whole Church, 'Who will rescue us from the power of the this spirit of the world?' Your answer should be: 'Nothing, no one, save the Spirit of God. I must be filled with the Spirit.'" (Experiencing, pp. 44-45)

"The Lord has left us no outward directions as to how much of the world we are to abandon or in what manner. In His Word He teaches us that without sacrifice, without a DELIBERATE separation from the world, we will never make much progress in grace. THE SPIRIT OF THIS WORLD HAS PENETRATED INTO US SO DEEPLY THAT WE DO NOT OBSERVE IT. We share in its desire for comfort and enjoyment, for self-pleasing and self-exaltation, without knowing how impossible these things make it for us to be filled with the Spirit. "Let us learn from the early disciples that, to be filled from the heavenly world with the Spirit, we must be ENTIRELY SEPARATE from the children of this world or from worldly Christians. WE MUST BE WILLING TO LIVE AS ENTIRELY DIFFERENT MEN, WHO LITERALLY REPRESENT HEAVEN ON EARTH, BECAUSE WE HAVE RECEIVED THE SPIRIT OF THE KING OF HEAVEN." (Experiencing, pp. 34-35)

Amen.

HINDRANCES

The following is from "Experiencing the Holy Spirit" chapter 5, How the blessing is Hindered:

"Many earnestly seek the full blessing of Pentecost and yet do not find it. Often the question is asked what may be the cause of this failure. To this inquiry more than one answer may be given. Sometimes the solution to the problem points in the direction of one or another sin which is still permitted. Worldliness...and indeed many more causes may also be often mentioned with justice. "Many people think they have come to the Lord and sincerely confessed these failures and put them away. Yet they complain that the blessing does not come. It is necessary to point out that there still remains one great hindrance; namely the root from which all other hindrances have their beginning. This root is nothing less than our individual SELF, the hidden life of SELF with it varied forms of self-seeking, self-pleasing, self-confidence, and self-satisfaction. "The more earnestly anyone strives to obtain the blessing and desires to know what prevents him, the more certainly he will be led to the discovery that it is HERE that the great evil lies. He himself is his WORST enemy. He must be liberated from himself, and the self-life to which he clings must be utterly lost. Only then can the life of God entirely fill him. "...[The Christian] knows the Lord Jesus as his Savior; he desires to know him better, but he does not yet understand that HE MUST HAVE A DEEPER DISCERNMENT OF THE DEATH OF THE CROSS AS A DEATH WHICH HE HIMSELF MUST DIE. He must actually DENY and LOSE his life; his WHOLE life and being in the world; before he can receive the full life of God. "This requirement is hard and difficult. And why is this so? Why should a Christian be called on to always deny himself, his own feelings, will, and pleasure? Why must he part with his life? The answer is very simple. It is because THAT LIFE IS SO COMPLETELY UNDER THE POWER OF SIN AND DEATH THAT IT HAS TO BE UTTERLY DENIED AND SACRIFICED. The self-life must be wholly taken away to make room for the life of God. He that would have the full, overflowing life of God, must utterly deny and lose his own life." (Experiencing, pp. 51-53)

"Man [has] turned himself away from God TO FIND DELIGHT IN HIMSELF AND THE WORLD. His life, his whole individuality, was perverted and withdrawn from the control of God THAT HE MIGHT SEEK AND SERVE HIMSELF. "YOU MUST UTTERLY LOSE THAT LIFE BEFORE THE FULL LIFE OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD CAN BE YOURS. TO THE MINUTEST DETAILS, ALWAYS AND IN EVERYTHING, YOU MUST DENY THAT SELF-LIFE! (Matthew 16:24). If any man will come after me, let him deny himSELF, and take up his cross, and follow me. "A DEEP CONVICTION OF THE ENTIRE CORRUPTION OF OUR NATURE IS AN EXPERIENCE THAT IS STILL LACKING IN MANY PEOPLE. IT APPEARS TO THEM BOTH STRANGE AND HARSH WHEN WE STAY THAT IN NOTHING IS THE CHRISTIAN FREE TO FOLLOW HIS OWN FEELING. Self-denial is a requirement that MUST PREVAIL in EVERY sphere of life and without ANY exceptions. The Lord has never withdrawn His words: 'Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he CANNOT be my disciple.' "At the time of his conversion, the young Christian has little understanding of this requirement. He receives the seed of the new life into his heart while the natural life is still strong. It was this way with Peter when the Lord addressed to him the above words. He was a disciple but an incomplete one. When his Lord was to die, instead of denying himself, he denied his Lord. But that grievous failure brought him at last to despair of himself and prepared him for losing his own life entirely and for being wholly filled with the life of Jesus. "We must all eventually come to this point. AS LONG AS A CHRISTIAN IMAGINES THAT IN SOME THINGS; for example, in his eating and drinking, in the spending of his time or money, or in his thinking and speaking about others; HE HAS THE RIGHT AND THE LIBERTY TO FOLLOW HIS OWN WISHES, TO PLEASE HIMSELF, AND TO MAINTAIN HIS OWN LIFE, HE CANNOT POSSIBLY ATTAIN TO THE FULL BLESSING OF PENTECOST. "My brethren, IT IS AN UNSPEAKABLY HOLY AND GLORIOUS THING THAT A MAN CAN BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT OF GOD. It DEMANDS inevitably THAT the present occupant and governor of the heart, our individual SELF, be CAST OUT and everything be surrendered into the hands of the new inhabitant, the Spirit of God. IF ONLY WE COULD UNDERSTAND THAT THE JOY AND POWER OF BEING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT WILL COME ONCE WE COMPLY WITH THE FIRST AND PRINCIPAL CONDITION; NAMELY, THAT HE ALONE BE ACKNOWLEDGED AS OUR LIFE AND OUR LEADER." (Experiencing, p. 54-56)

Attaining Pentecost (Part 2)
