This is a short service, lasting less than 20 minutes, that normally
forms part of the regular Sunday morning worship of the church.
It is the occasion when parents bring their child(ren) to church to say
thank you to God for their birth, and to acknowledge that they are a
special gift from God.
Parents are invited to make promises before God and everyone present in
an act of dedication, using a form of words that they can write
themselves or otherwise agree with the minister.
A special prayer of blessing is also said for the child, following the
example of Jesus who welcomed and loved little children.
We do not use water, and in that sense this service is different from
the christening or infant baptism offered by some other churches.
Parents are free to invite close friends or family to make promises
concerning the well being and upbringing of their child. If they choose,
they can call these people 'God parents'.
Finally the members of the church congregation promise to pray for and
support the family in whatever way they are able.
This service is open to all parents, whether they are church members or
not. There is no fee for this service.
Baptists don't baptise people until they are old enough to make a
personal commitment of Christian faith.
