BATH ROAD METHODIST CHURCH

The chapel was built in 1880, at a total cost of £5631. By 1890, Swindon was able to pride itself on having the largest Railway Engineering works in the world. For the next 100 years this impressive suite of Methodist buildings provided the base for the work, worship and witness of its congregation in the Old Town neighbourhood, and throughout the whole borough.

Radical changes in railway engineering and production methods heralded the end of the era of the vast railway workshops. A successful civic drive attracted many new employers to Swindon, and the rapid expansion of the town challenged the Christian denominations to plan and act ecumenically together.

In 1969, Bath Road committed themselves to work closely with Immanuel United Reformed Church and Christ Church with St Mary’s and from this the Old Town Ecumenical Parish was born.

Following Bath Road’s centenary celebrations in 1980, the congregation embarked on a £350,000 scheme to transform the whole of the church internally, with the emphasis on accessibility for the handicapped, and flexibility for the buildings to be used in all kinds of different ways to serve both church and surrounding community. The rest of the site incorporated 23 sheltered flats with warden cover.

To this lively church community you can be assured of a warm welcome. The following pages will give you some idea of it’s place within the Swindon and Marlborough Methodist Circuit, and of its many sided activities.

CHRIST CHURCH WITH ST MARY’S

Christ Church Swindon is known as ‘the Church on the hill’ and its spire can indeed be seen from miles around. It dates from 1851. The daughter Church St Mary’s in the Mall was dedicated on the western side of the partnership in 1926 and rebuilt in 1979 when Goddard House was built with flats for elderly residents. Both Churches were proud to become founder members of the Old Town ecumenical parish in 1969.

Today our vision is to be a joyful, vibrant Anglican presence within the Swindon Old Town Partnership of Churches. We wish to provide a place where people of all ages can grow spiritually, worship together and play their part in building God’s Kingdom in Old Town and further afield.

We seek to be a Christian Community where people are accepted and given the support and friendship they require to live out their faith in the world.

We provide opportunities for people to have fun together and enjoy Christian fellowship while serving God practically in many aspects of Christian service.

We pray and expect God to move amongst us in many ways. Why not come and join our Christian family you will be made very welcome.

God bless you as you consider
how and where to get involved.

IMMANUEL UNITED REFORMED CHURCH

Immanuel is the oldest Nonconformist Church in Swindon being the successor of the first Congregational Church which was opened in Newport Street in 1804. It moved to its present site on 13th September 1939 and in 1972 became part of the new United Reformed Church when the Presbyterian and Congregational Churches united. More recently the Churches of Christ and the Scottish Congregational Church have joined the URC.

The life of Immanuel centres upon it’s worship. We seek to relate the message of the Bible to modern life and both preaching and singing are prominent in our worship. We enjoy freedom from rigid doctrine and seek to provide opportunities for personal growth in supportive, accepting atmosphere. From the beginning we have always played an important role in serving the local community.

Our Junior Church is a vital part of our church life and Christian Education classes are offered for children every Sunday during the morning service. There is a crèche for the very youngest children.

We urgently seek Christian Unity and are proud to belong to the Swindon Old Town Partnership of Churches.

We invite you to join us!
